Brand and lifestyle photography and video production

About The Service

Vantas shoots photography and video production that shows the people behind a company: founders, employees, customers and the work they do. We are based in Dallas and shoot for brands here and on national assignments in other U.S. markets. Our work in this area includes editorial photography for D Magazine and lifestyle shoots for Deep Ellum Brewing and Noble Vines.

How a brand shoot runs

It starts with a discovery call with Woody Lawson, our owner and creative director, who also directs the shoot. Before we talk about cameras we ask why the company exists, why its customers should care, and how it differs from the alternative. Those answers set the direction for every shoot that follows.

Pre-production is finished before a shoot date is locked:

  • A signed agreement listing deliverables, formats, the shoot date and the delivery date
  • A creative brief and a shot list you approve, with a mood board or reference images when they help
  • A location walkthrough, in person or by video
  • Interview subjects and on-camera staff confirmed, with wardrobe direction sent ahead
  • Outside talent, hair and makeup, and styling booked when the shoot needs them
  • Releases signed for everyone who appears
  • A call sheet sent to the crew 72 hours ahead

On the day, shots are ranked. Hero shots, the ones the project fails without, are scheduled first and confirmed on set before we wrap. Setups are grouped by location and the schedule carries buffer time, which matters when the people on camera also have jobs to do that day. Crew size runs from two people to fifteen depending on scope.

Post-production covers selects and retouching for stills, and editing, color grading and sound design for video. Revision rounds are written into the scope. You receive retouched high-resolution stills, web-optimized versions, and finished video exports in the cuts named in your agreement.

Projects and retainers

A single production fits a defined need: a founder film, a new website, a campaign, a round of team portraits. You get a fixed list of deliverables, a shoot date and a delivery date. One project is also a sensible way to work together before committing to a retainer.

A retainer is where brand work pays off most. It sets a monthly scope of shoot time and deliverables, includes a planning session each month, and holds the monthly rate fixed for the initial term. Each month builds on the same brief, so the library grows in one direction and the tenth shoot still looks like it belongs with the first.

What drives cost on either one:

  • Crew size and the number of shoot days
  • The number of locations, and travel if the shoot is outside Dallas
  • The number of people on camera, and whether talent is hired
  • Hair and makeup, wardrobe and styling
  • The count of final images and video cuts, and how much editing each needs
  • How and where the work will be licensed for use

Questions marketing directors ask

Should we use our own employees or hire talent?

We decide that together in pre-production, scene by scene. Employees bring credibility and are the right call for culture and process work. Hired talent gives more control for lifestyle scenes and stays usable if an employee leaves. Many shoots use both.

Who handles releases?

For talent we source, we handle the releases and make sure they cover the usage in your license. For your employees, customers or anyone you bring, your team is responsible for the clearances. We can supply the release form.

Who owns the photos and video?

Our standard agreement gives you a non-exclusive, perpetual license to use the final deliverables for marketing, advertising, web and social media, plus internal and external communications. Vantas keeps the copyright. Passing files to a third party needs written consent, so name any agency or partner in pre-production.

What about music in the videos?

When we select the music, we license it for the usage in your agreement. If you supply a track, your team is responsible for clearing it.

We have offices in more than one city. Can you cover them?

Yes. We work in more than ten U.S. markets, pairing creative direction from Dallas with local crew, so the work from each office matches. Multi-location projects are scoped as one production with a shot list per site.
